Family Therapy

The effects of addiction can be devastating and hard to recover from. This is true for many individuals, but it can also be true for families. Whether it’s a parent, sibling, child, or partner who’s struggling with addiction, the rest of the families suffer, too.

Our weekly family program provides a safe and nurturing space for family members to come together, share their experiences, and learn valuable skills for navigating the challenges of addiction. Through a series of structured group sessions, we address topics such as understanding denial, healing and forgiveness, and the impact of anger on communication.

We recognize that addiction can ‘take down the house’, disrupting relationships, eroding trust, and causing profound emotional pain. That’s why our family program is dedicated to rebuilding and strengthening familial bonds. By fostering a sense of community among families, we provide a network of support and understanding that is crucial for healing and recovery.

How Does It Work?

Just like individual therapy, there are various forms of family therapy you may go through. The focus will largely be on the addiction and how everything about it has affected the family. They’ll be given time and space to explain how they’ve been affected and express their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and everything else through a variety of methods:

  • Family behavioural therapy. This stems from regular cognitive behavioural therapy used on individuals. This therapy focuses on the behaviours of the one with the substance abuse disorder and how it’s affected the family as a whole. You’ll work on creating new, better behaviours with the whole family involved.
  • Solution-focused therapy. This method moves away from focusing on the reasons for the dysfunction and shifts to finding solutions for specific problems. When the whole family is involved in this, they can come to solutions that work for everyone.
  • Community reinforcement and family training. Also known as CRAFT, this method helps families learn reinforcement strategies to encourage their loved ones with addiction to change their behaviours for the better. With this approach, the family learns techniques and practices to continue outside of therapy to help the one with a substance addiction stay clean.
  • Behavioural couples therapy. This one is geared toward couples who cohabitate, where one is recovering from addiction. Whether the couple has children or not, this form of therapy can help them repair their relationship while making the home a more comfortable place. With this therapy, the one with the substance abuse disorder is encouraged to state their intent to not use substances with their partner there for support and accountability.

These are only some of the methods of family therapy you might see used here at Lily Rain Recovery. We’ll work with you and your family to determine the best course of action.

The road to recovery can be a long one when you’ve been struggling with addiction, and that goes for your family, too. It may be challenging and painful, but involving your family is important for many reasons:

  • It can help repair your relationships before permanent damage is done
  • It can help spare children from being permanently scarred from the experience
  • Family support and involvement can make recovery easier and more likely to produce lasting results and reduce the risk of relapse
  • Your family will come to better understand addiction and how it’s affecting you
  • Your family will work through things together and become stronger as a unit
  • Your family will become familiar with the warning signs of relapse and can help prevent it

Lastly, family therapy can help you work through issues additional to addiction. Many who suffer from addiction also struggle with mental health issues and other stressors. Our therapy can help you with many other things:

  • Family therapy for anxiety
  • Family therapy for depression
  • Family therapy for stress
  • Family therapy for trauma
  • Family therapy for eating disorders
  • And more
